Heritage Trophy 2022 – Richtersveld – 17 to 24 September

UNESCO World Heritage Site Richtersveld Transfronteir Park – the event focusses on the rich biodiversity of the pristine and vast desert landscape, the unique fauna and flora, breath-taking views and the cultures of the Nama-people of the Richtersveld WHS. The adventurous route takes participants from Vioolsdrif on to Keetmanshoop, Ais-Ais and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, via the Sendelingsdrif ferry to the Richtersveld National Park in South Africa, and the Richtersveld conservation area (WHS), and finally ending near Springbok. This is a typical self-drive, self-sufficient overlanding trip in a 4×4 with high ground clearance. Note our route will take us through rough terrain, from wild camping with no ablutions to camping with good ablutions and last night luxury accommodation. The convoy is limited to a maximum of 10 guest vehicles. This is a “bucket-list” adventure!

Background on the Heritage Trophy

South Africa – a country of pristine natural beauty with vast areas of biodiversity, rich in fauna & flora, from tropical climates to deserts, mountains, plains, hills and valleys, rivers, a 2,800km coastline, and a place of many diverse cultures. Our people have different backgrounds and an interesting heritage, some of which has been recorded over centuries with other culture and heritage chronicles being passed on from generation to generation.

Scientists and archaeologists excavate our soil, dig up our past and unearth ancient lost cities. They exhume sacred and ancient graves, and analyse and interpret their findings to trace, track and document our ancestral history.

UNESCO awarded South Africa with several World Heritage Sites and Biosphere Reserves, recognising our rich fauna and flora and distinct cultures to embrace, protect, and conserve. Follow us on this epic journey to discover the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and UNESCO Biosphere Reserves of South Africa, to explore its immaculate natural beauty, to discover it’s heritage, pursue its hidden gems and find unexplored places of interest, to uncover its lesser traversed areas, to experience its wilderness and traverse biodiverse protected areas with proper authorisation.

The Heritage Trophy is an annual event held during the National Heritage Week around 24 September in South Africa. We will visit all the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in South Africa over the coming years. Every event is a professionally guided overlanding adventure. It is NOT a timed route, a race, testing of driver skills or a vehicle bragging rights competition, but rather a challenge of team spirit, soul of outdoor adventure.

On top of this you will have to apply good navigational skills, and to gain knowledge on local heritage, nature, fauna and flora, archaeological and cultural history – know your stuff!!

Past event: Limpopo 2021

Our inaugural event was held in Limpopo. It was a fantastic adventure through the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve. The adventure included special permits for traversing rights through the Soutpansberg wildlife protected area and at Mapungubwe where we wild-camped in the Limpopo Riverbed for a night.
